June WBNA Meeting

What: WBNA Meeting
When: Saturday, June 27, at 2pm
Where: Central Christian Church Fellowship Hall 2702 Avenue O½:

We have a great meeting coming up! Our neighbor Dr. Don Wilkerson will be speaking on "Keeping the Island Beautiful".  Council Member Craig Brown has asked to meet afterward with District 2 residents to discuss funding available for neighborhood improvements. We have also invited District 1 Council Member Tarris Woods to attend.

From Dr. Wilkerson:  Why is litter an important issue for our community? Here are just a few statistics from the nation’s largest litter study, conducted by Keep America Beautiful.
  • The presence of litter in a community decreases property values by 7%.
  • Of homeowners surveyed, 40% believe that litter reduces home values by 10% to 24%.
  • 60% of property appraisers would reduce a home’s value if it was littered.
  • Individuals under 30 are more likely to litter than those who are older.
  • A strong contributor to littering is the presence of existing litter.
Litter also has environmental consequences – particularly given our proximity to the coast. Litter entering storm drains can contaminate coastal waterways, beaches and wetlands. A wide range of marine life, including dolphins and sea turtles, can mistakenly eat various sources of litter, leading to significantly higher mortality rates.
